A Pint of Fish Fingers
Why do we travel? And why do Luxembourgers travel so much? Is it the smallness of the country – and the resulting claustrophobia for some – that makes them so readily adopt other places as their homes away from home? Is it the multilingual dimension that makes travelling so easy, opening a way of accessing other cultures that goes beyong the mere touristy one? Or are there perhaps entirely different motives at play? How do we travel then – as travellers or tourists? In twenty-six 'letters', Robbie Martzen reflects on his own travel experiences and on how it feels to be able to compare – and eventually view one's home in a different light.
Robbie Martzen was born in 1969 in Luxembourg and grew up in Wiltz and Luxembourg City. He did a BA in Translation Studies and an MA in modern languages and literature in Brussels and Dublin. Several of his poems and short stories have been published in anthologies and journals, both in Luxembourg and abroad, and long- and shortlisted at various competitions, such as the Blue Nose Poet-of-the-Year Competition in London ('Highly Commended Poet' in 1999) and the National Literary Competition 1996. He likes nature, animals, and sometimes people. He also enjoys writing about all of the above. He is currently working on a poetry collection that will hopefully see the light of day in the not-too-distant future.
